RECIPE

Kids (and so do we!) are often fond of chocolate or a slightly sweeter drink. This way, we ingest too many unnatural sugars unnoticed. This homemade chocolate milk with raw cocoa contains only 0.4 grams of natural sugar from oats per glass — compared to 20 grams in a glass of Chocomel. When you choose to add dates to your chocolate, there will be more sugar in your chocolate. This is still less than the sugar found in pre-packaged chocolate, and it is a natural sweetener instead of heavily processed refined sugars.

So you don't have to feel guilty if you sweeten your homemade chocolate milk in a natural way. Kids can enjoy chocolate milk while you know it's nutritious. You can read more about the benefits of raw cocoa below. We'll start with how to make this chocolate milk yourself.

STEP 1

Add the oatmeal, cashews, cocoa, vanilla, date (s) and a pinch of salt into the MULSI sieve.

STEP 2
Add the (hot or cold) water into the MULSI basin.

STEP 3
Blend with the hand blender until everything is well mixed.

STEP 4
Press through with the pestle.

Tip: You can use the pulp to make a chocolate paste-like spread. Add one teaspoon of coconut oil and one teaspoon of cocoa. Mix the whole thing thoroughly again until the mass becomes smooth and you have a dark chocolate paste!

Made in less than a minute, just the way you want it. Without the unnecessary additions.

Why choose homemade chocolate milk? Here are the main benefits of chocolate milk with pure cocoa

For many people, the famous yellow packages of Chocomel are a feeling of youth. But did you know that a glass of Chocomel contains no less than 20 grams of sugar? That's almost five sugar cubes per glass. This sugary drink does not do your health any good and causes spikes and falls in your blood sugar levels.

Fortunately, things can also be done differently. With oat milk, raw cocoa, dates and possibly some vegetable protein powder, you can make a creamy, nutritious and sugar-free chocolate milk that is just as delicious in a few minutes.

The perfect base for your chocolate milk

When you make your own plant-based milk, you can be sure that it contains no unnecessary additives or sugars. With a plant-based milk maker such as MULSI, fresh oat milk is on the table in less than 5 minutes. Of course, you can also choose and experiment with a different basis. Which plant-based milk do you choose?

Oat milk
As in this recipe, you can opt for oat milk, which is naturally creamy and high in fiber. These fibers ensure that your blood sugar remains stable, so you are satiated longer and less likely to crave snacks. Moreover, oat milk has a mild flavour and is perfect to combine with cocoa.

Cashew milk
Extra creamy and subtle in taste, ideal if you want to make a fuller chocolate milk or if you like your chocolate milk to froth. This is because cashews foam well because it is a bit fatter.

Almond Milk
Much lower in calories and fat than oat milk, with a smooth, nutty flavor. Perfect if you want to monitor your calorie intake.

Coconut milk
Gives your chocolate milk a tropical twist and a deliciously full and creamy structure. You may want to omit the dates if you're using coconut milk as a base, as coconut milk is slightly sweet on its own.

Raw cocoa: heart opener and antioxidant boost

Instead of processed cocoa powders with sugar, opt for unsweetened raw cocoa. It's full of flavonoids — powerful antioxidants that protect your body against free radicals. Research shows that cocoa 20 times (!) contains more antioxidants than blueberries and three times as much as green tea.

4 main benefits of raw cocoa:

  1. Rich in antioxidants

Cocoa is one of the richest natural sources of antioxidants you can find. Antioxidants are substances that protect you against free radials. And those, in turn, are the substances that make you age faster, dull your skin and lower your energy. Antioxidants are therefore important for our energy level.

But there's more: these antioxidants also help balance your cholesterol. They raise “good” HDL cholesterol and indirectly lower “bad” LDL cholesterol. That means less risk of cardiovascular disease and a stronger, more resilient body. And did you know that flavonoids also improve your insulin sensitivity? This helps to keep your blood sugar stable and can even protect against type 2 diabetes in the long term.
  2. Contains essential minerals

Raw cocoa is not only delicious, it's also full of important minerals that your body needs every day. Magnesium, for example, is the absolute number one reason why cocoa is such a concentrate. One tablespoon of raw cocoa already contains 53 mg of magnesium. This mineral is crucial for strong muscles and bones, healthy brain function and a calm nervous system.

In addition, cocoa contains essential nutrients such as copper and iron. Copper helps produce red blood cells and a healthy metabolism. Iron ensures that oxygen is transported efficiently through your blood, so that you have more energy and your body functions optimally.

In short, cocoa helps you get a lot of natural minerals that you don't have to swallow in a pill or bottle, if your body gets enough of them thanks to the right food.
  3. Happiness enhancing effect

Perhaps one of the magical properties of cocoa is that it can influence your mood. It's full of phenylalanine, a substance that your body converts into dopamine, the happiness hormone that makes you happy and focused. But that's not all: cocoa also contains serotonin, tyramine and anandamide, substances that can make you feel warm and happy.
  4. Improves your sleep
The magnesium in cocoa helps you fall asleep faster and sleep deeper. Despite the minimal amount of caffeine, raw cocoa is therefore actually relaxing.

Tips for the tastiest healthy chocolate milk

  • Always use unsweetened cocoa: check the packaging that it only says' cocoa 'or 'lean cocoa powder'.
  • For extra creaminess, add a scoop vegetable protein powder toe.
  • For a spicy twist you can add a pinch of cinnamon or cayenne pepper.
  • Make larger portions and store in the fridge for a quick cold chocolate.
